I had mentioned in Monday’s closing report that Nifty, Sensex might bounce because it was reaching an oversold zone. Short covering and value buying lifted the Indian equity markets on Tuesday. The key indices provisionally closed with substantial gains of around 1.5 per cent each, as buying was witnessed in automobile, banking and healthcare stocks. The Nifty recaptured 8000 while the Sensex surged up 400 points Tuesday. The wider 51-scrip Nifty of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) surged by 124.60 points or 1.58 per cent to 8,032.85 points. The Sensex touched a high of 26,249.03 points and a low of 25,803.19 points during the intra-day trade. India on Monday successfully test-fired its indigenously developed intercontinental surface-to-surface nuclear-capable ballistic missile Agni-V from the Abdul Kalam Island off the Odisha coast in Balasore district. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

This is the fourth and final test of the missile, developed and successfully tested by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) under the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme, according to defence sources.

It was launched around 11.05 a.m. from a mobile launcher complex-4 of the Integrated Test Range (ITR), the sources said. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

"We are analysing the test launch after collecting information from radars. The report suggests it is a successful launch," said an official source.

On January 31, the canisterised version of the missile was successfully test-fired.

Speaking about the Agni-V missile, V.K. Saraswat, former DRDO chief and Niti Aayog member, said: "Right from the beginning, the missile was designed for the canisterised version."

"Agni-V has all the capability to meet evolving threat and operational requirement of India. Now, we should look for introduction of force multipliers like MIRV (multiple independently targetable re-entry vehicle) in the missile." The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

The Agni-V missile, in its operational form is designed to be stored and launched from the canister, enhancing its storage, operational readiness, transportability, response time and shelf life. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

MIRV is a missile payload with several warheads, each capable of being aimed at independent targets. This helps in reducing the efficiency of the anti-ballistic missile capability of the adversary. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

The missile employs Ring Laser Gyro-based Inertial Navigation System (RINS) and Micro Navigation System (MINS) for navigation, which support the missile to reach the target point within a few metres of accuracy. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

With the success of the final development test, Agni-V is now ready for induction into the strategic arsenal of India. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

On why only four tests for clearing the missile for operations, Saraswat said, "DRDO conducted 30-odd launches before inducting Prithvi missiles. Those were the initial days."

"Now, we are using proven technology which does not require large number of tests. DRDO today has high level of instrumentation and the processing capability on ground as well as in the missile is high." The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

DRDO has been steadily increasing the range of the missiles through redesigning the operational missiles for longer ranges. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

Speaking about Agni-V missile's capability to launch satellite, Saraswat said, "It is a building block. It can be used to deliver satellites, below 100 kg weight, into the lower earth orbit (LEO) with addition of a small injecting stage in the missile. We had made studies at that time."

A LEO satellite can be launched during the war to gather information on the "theatre battlefields" for specific requirements. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

Agni-V was first tested in 2012 when V.K. Saraswat was the Secretary, DRDO.

The Inter-Continental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) Agni-V has the capability to strike targets anywhere in all of Asia and parts of Africa and Europe.

The three-stage 17 metres long, 2-metre wide, 50-tonne Agni-V is capable of delivering nuclear warhead of over a tonne to a distance of more than 5,000 km.

Once the Agni-V is inducted into the Indian military, India would join the super exclusive club of countries with ICBMs alongside the US, Russia, China, France and Britain.

The first test of Agni-V was conducted on April 19, 2012, while the second test was launched on September 15, 2013.The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

SBI Index (The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions)
The yearly State Bank of India (SBI) Composite Index, an indicator for tracking India’s manufacturing activity, has crashed to an all-time low in December 2016 of 45.5 (moderate decline), compared to last month’s revised index of 50 (low growth). According to the researchers at SBI, the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) may show a decline in December 2016. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

"Retail sales during the month of November 2016 were down in the range of 20-40% due to currency crunch and negative sentiments on account of uncertainty post Government’s monetary initiative. Even the festive season shifted early by almost a month this time, which also resulted in lower sales during November due to post-festive sluggishness. Overall we feel that the effect of demonetisation is more of short term nature, say a quarter or two in most of the sectors, except real estate, jewellery, and luxury goods, and will normalise thereafter," SBI says in a report. SBI Index 14(The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions)

Interestingly, the directional validation of the SBI composite index also throws some more interesting facts on manufacturing activity. The directional validation indicates the direction of the predicted month-on-month index with the actual IIP-Manufacturing index growth for the corresponding month.

SBI Index2 (The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions)
Sectors such as fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG), consumer durables, plantation and plantation products, and fertilizers, which mostly derive strength from rural influence, will seem to face certain moderation in demand from the consumer side, owing to significant amount of cash transaction involved in these sectors. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

"We may see weak Q3 sales for India Incorporation as most of the sectors that do cash sales - are either extending credit or are not doing sales. The weak sales would have a trickle-down impact on the supply chain, thus hampering economic activity across sectors and supply chain," the report from SBI says.

SBI Index3 (The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions)

The report also highlights low credit growth, which it feels is a matter of concern. The fortnightly data of all scheduled commercial banks (ASCB) indicates that credit off-take (year-on-year) continues to be a laggard and has declined to a historical low of 5.8% as on 9 December 2016.

SBI Index4 (The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions)

"Due to weak credit off-take and huge money inflows, we expect a faster rate of marginal cost of funds-based lending rate (MCLR) transmission by banks in the coming days as inflation trajectory is expected to remain benign with consumer price index (CPI) inflation at sub-4% for coming months till January 2017. Though inflation may increase thereafter (post January), it may not be more than 4.5% by March 2017," SBI concluded. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

The Continuing Muddle at a Pro-Trump Political Committee -The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

Trump (The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions)
A political action committee (PAC) that backed Donald Trump's bid for the presidency is continuing to flout campaign finance laws. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

Earlier this month, ProPublica reported that the America Comes First PAC had violated the rules by not disclosing the source of its funding before Election Day and by exceeding caps on contribution amounts. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

America Comes First gave $115,000 to Trump Victory, a group that raised money for the Trump campaign and for national and state-level Republican groups. It now ranks as the second-biggest PAC contributor to Trump Victory, according to a list compiled by the nonprofit Center for Responsive Politics — behind GEO Group, a private prison company.

After the ProPublica article was published, the treasurer of the PAC, David Schamens, said the group's filings with the Federal Election Commission were inaccurate, and that they would be amended. Last week they were — but the amended filing includes new irregularities.

For example, the original filing lists Schamens as the top donor to the PAC. The new documents show the top donor as Tradedesk Financial, a firm that lists an address on Wall Street. (Schamens didn't respond to questions about Tradedesk Financial or other information in the new filings. One online record indicates that a woman named Piliana Schamens was linked to Tradedesk in 2010.) However, a PAC is not permitted to receive direct corporate support. Perhaps recognizing that restriction, America Comes First's new filings now identify the group as a super PAC, meaning that moving forward, it can receive unlimited corporate money.

Yet declaring itself a super PAC created a new problem for America Comes First, because super PACs can't donate directly to a political campaign such as Trump Victory. A super PAC can make independent expenditures, such as on advertisements that support a candidate, but those can't be made in coordination with the campaign. To reconcile this problem in its new filings, America Comes First reclassified the $115,000 it gave as independent expenditures. Yet the payee is still Trump Victory, meaning the expense went to a campaign — in violation of the rules for super PACs. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

Schamens, who attended an October fundraiser with Trump as federal regulators waited for any disclosure from his PAC, was accused by the Securities and Exchange Commission of securities fraud in the early 1990s. In a settlement, he did not admit to the allegations but agreed to be barred from associating with investment companies or securities brokers. Schamens currently is director of a New Jersey technology company that optimizes and expedites securities trading for financial institutions and traders. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

In an interview with ProPublica before the amended filing, Schamens said that among the concerns he related to the Trump camp was the over-enforcement of securities regulations since 2008.The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

I had mentioned in Friday’s closing report that Nifty, Sensex might bounce back next week. The major indices of the Indian stock markets suffered a sharp correction on Monday of around 0.90% over Friday’s close. Investors were spooked by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's hint of raising taxes on income generated via stock market. Besides, continuous outflow of foreign funds dragged the key domestic indices lower. However, the Finance Minister Arun Jaitley clarified on Sunday itself that the government has no plans to impose long-term capital gains tax on share transactions in the upcoming budget, describing media reports of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's speech earlier as erroneous. Market sentiments however remained low on Monday. The BSE market breadth was tilted in favour of the bears -- with 2,015 declines against 583 advances. On the NSE, there were 197 advances, 1,249 declines and 53 unchanged. Pharma stocks continued to be under pressure as were metal stocks after there was a sharp decline of metal prices in Asian trade.

Industry chamber Confederation of Indian Industry said on Sunday that "a digital infrastructure providing comprehensive data to financial institutions would help smoothen access to credit from the borrower's angle and assessment of credit worthiness from the lender's side. It would supply identification, financial information, credit information and other information related to governance of a company.” CII has suggested that abundant data on small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and corporates through various sources can be made available to the banks and other lending institutions. The banks may choose to offer loans at varied interest rates depending on the strength of the data of the customer, it added. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

An auditors body on Monday sought independent powers of investigation for Parliament's Public Accounts Committee (PAC), and demanded that banks, other financial institutions and PPP projects be brought under the purview of India's official auditor. "The Institute of Public Auditors of India (IPAI) has strongly demanded that the PAC be given enough powers to take up issues for investigation on its own. "It also advocated to bring banks, other financial institutions and projects under the public-private partnership (PPP) within the scope of the Comptroller and Auditor Generals' (CAG) audit," the body of public finance specialists said.  "A report should also be placed in Parliament about recommendations of the PAC, which have not been accepted by the government, along with reasons thereof," IPAI said in a statement, adding that a time limit should be set within which departments should submit their Action Taken Reports. "Currently, banks, financial institutions and PPP projects are not under the purview of CAG, and in view of various anomalies witnessed recently in these important segments of economy, the CAG should be empowered to audit these sectors' records to ensure transparency and accountability," the statement added. Bank Nifty closed lower on Monday.
