As many as 33 lakh new taxpayers have been added to the tax net post demonetisation, parliament was informed on Tuesday. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

However the number of taxpayers added is less than the number of taxpayers added between the financial years 2014-15 and 2015-16, when 40 lakh extra returns were filed, the government data showed. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

"The number of income taxpayers has increased after demonetisation. During the period of November 9, 2016 to March 31, 2017, 1.96 crore returns were filed as compared to 1.63 crore returns filed during corresponding period of FY 2015-16 and 1.23 crore returns filed during corresponding period of FY 2014-15," Minister of State for Finance Santosh Gangwar told Rajya Sabha in a written reply. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

As for the objectives of demonetisation, the Minister said that it "seeks to create a new 'normal' wherein the GDP would be bigger, cleaner and real".

"This exercise (demonetisation) is a part of government's resolve to eliminate corruption, black money, counterfeit currency and terror funding," he added.

In a separate reply, the Minister said that there was "no official estimation of the quantum of black money in India". The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

"There was no official estimation of quantum of black money in India. However, post demonetisation, the Income Tax Department (ITD) conducted searches in 900 groups of persons during November 2016 to March 2017 leading to seizure of Rs 900 crore and admission of undisclosed income of Rs 7,961 crore," he said.

He added that during the same period, 8239 surveys were conducted leading to detection of undisclosed income of Rs 6,745 crore. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

The Minister disclosed that during the current Financial Year up to June 30, the ITD has conducted searches in 102 groups, seizing assets worth Rs 103 crore. The persons searched have admitted undisclosed income of Rs 2,670 crore.

He also said that the ITD has also launched 'Operation Clean Money' with the mission to "create a tax compliant society through a fair, transparent and non-intrusive tax administration where every Indian takes pride in paying taxes". The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

Gangwar said under the operation, about 18 lakh persons whose cash transactions did not appear in line with their tax profile were identified and approached through email/sms.

"More than 9.27 lakh responses were received giving information on 13.33 lakh accounts involving cash deposits of around Rs 2.89 lakh crore. Out of this, a record number of 5.27 lakh responses were received in the first 12 days of the operation," he said.

"Advance data analytics tools were deployed which further identified 5.56 lakh new cases and about one lakh cases in which either partial or no response was received in the earlier phase. Besides, about 200 high risk clusters of persons were identified for appropriate action," he said. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

GST, weak demand pull manufacturing output down: PMI-The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

1 August  2017

India's manufacturing sector's output declined last month due to the launch of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and weak demand, a key macro-economic data showed on Tuesday.

The Nikkei India Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI), which is a composite indicator of manufacturing performance, stood at 47.9 in July from the index reading of 50.9 in June 2017. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

An index reading of above 50 indicates an overall increase in economic activity, and below 50 an overall decrease. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

As per the figures, the Nikkei India Manufacturing PMI was at its lowest mark in July since February 2009 and highlighted the first deterioration in business conditions in 2017 so far.

"Manufacturing growth in India came to a halt in July, with the PMI down to its lowest mark in almost eight-and-half years amid widespread reports that the sector has been adversely affected by the implementation of the goods and services tax," said Pollyanna De Lima, economist at IHS Markit and the author of the report. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

"The reductions in output, new orders and purchasing activity were all the steepest since early-2009. The downturn was broad-based across all subsectors covered by the survey, with output scaled back among firms in the consumer, intermediate and investment goods categories amid falling order books." The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

According to the Nikkei India Manufacturing PMI report, downturn was widespread across three broad areas of manufacturing, with intermediate goods producers being the worst affected.

The report pointed out that "incoming new work" dropped for the first time in the year-to-date period and at the steepest pace since early-2009. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

"The weakening trend for demand, relatively muted cost inflationary pressures and discounted factory gate charges provide powerful tools for monetary policy easing, which has the potential to revive economic growth," the IHS Markit economist said.

"Upcoming PMI releases will show whether underlying conditions remain on the downside or if July's contraction was a temporary blip. Goods producers foresee the latter, with panellists widely commenting that a lack of clarity regarding tax rates caused confusion among suppliers and manufacturers themselves when agreeing on prices."

On the bright side, the report added that 12-month outlook for output remained positive in July, with companies expecting more clarity regarding the GST to support growth. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

World stock markets advanced Tuesday as investors studied a fresh round of corporate earnings reports and data releases for signs the global economy is on the right track.

KEEPING SCORE: Britain's FTSE 100 rose 0.6 percent to 7,413 and France's CAC 40 added 0.5 percent to 5,118. Germany's DAX also rose 0.5 percent to 12,177. Wall Street was poised to open higher, with Dow futures up 0.4 percent and broader S&P 500 futures gaining 0.2 percent.

DATA DUMP: Investors were focusing on a deluge of economic data Tuesday, starting with a private Chinese manufacturing survey showing activity expanded last month, rising to its highest level in four months. The Caixin/Markit factory purchasing managers' index offered hope the world's No. 2 economy is holding up better than thought. That was followed by data showing the eurozone grew by a robust quarterly rate of 0.6 percent in the second quarter, extending a strong performance in the previous quarter. U.S. manufacturing and personal income numbers are due later.

BOTTOM LINE: Japanese electronics giant Sony and automaker Honda extended the trend of strong corporate results this earnings season. Sony reported that quarterly profit nearly quadrupled while Honda posted a 19 percent increase in net income. The results came after trading in Tokyo closed for the day, so investors won't be able to react until Wednesday. In Britain, BP's earnings were better than expected, though the costs of the 2010 oil spill continued to weigh on the bottom line.

TRUMP TROUBLES: President Donald Trump's decision to fire his White House communications director, Anthony Scaramucci, just 11 days into the job raised concerns over dysfunction in the administration that could undermine investor confidence and further weigh on the dollar. The firing came the same day that former homeland security secretary John Kelly was sworn in as White House chief of staff. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

QUOTEWORTHY: "The biggest question now must surely be if this latest White House firing is indicative of an administration in total meltdown, in which case the U.S. dollar seems unlikely to avoid being swept along with it," Michael Every, head of Asia-Pacific research at Rabobank, wrote in a commentary. "Or could the new chief of staff bring some much-needed discipline and order to the Trump administration?"

Some of the largest investors, intermediaries and issuers in Asia Pacific are confident of India's stable economic growth in the region of 6.5% and 7.5% over the next 12-18 months, Moody's Investors Service said in a statement on Monday. According to the global credit rating agency Moody's, the views were gathered in a poll conducted jointly with its Indian affiliate, ICRA Ltd. "More than 60% of market participants that Moody's and ICRA surveyed in Mumbai and Singapore believe that India's (Baa3 positive) GDP (gross domestic product) growth rate will range between 6.5% and 7.5% over the next 12-18 months," Moody's said. "Given the economic and institutional reforms in India, and further changes that could follow, India will likely grow faster than similarly rated peers over the next 12-18 months despite a short-term drag caused by demonetisation," said Marie Diron, a Moody's Associate Managing Director. On the impact of Goods and Services Tax (GST), Moody's said that over the medium term, the GST will contribute to productivity gains and faster GDP growth by making it easier to do business, thereby unifying national markets and enhancing India's attractiveness as a foreign investment destination. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

SBI cuts savings interest rate to 3.5% for 90% of its account holders -The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

SBI (The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions)
State Bank of India (SBI), the country’s largest lender, has once again hit savings account holders by reducing its interest rates to 3.5% from 4%. These rates would be applicable for savings account with up to Rs1 crore deposit. However, those with a deposit of over Rs1 crore in the savings account would continue to get 4% interest. According to SBI's Managing Director Rajnish Kumar, 90% of the total savings accounts held by the bank have a balance of below Rs1 crore.

In a regulatory filing, SBI said, "The bank is introducing a two-tier saving bank interest rate with effect from 31 July 2017. While balance above Rs1 crore will continue to earn interest at 4% per annum, interest at 3.5% per annum shall be offered on balances of Rs1 crore and below."

"The decline in the rate of inflation and high real interest rates are the primary considerations warranting a revision in the rate of interest on savings bank deposits," the lender added.

In a release, Kumar said the cut in interest rates was not likely to affect the number of savings accounts with the bank or its current and savings account (CASA) ratio. "It is the convenience, safety, trust which is still in the bank's favour. We are not anticipating any major impact on the CASA ratio or saving accounts," he added. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

SBI had maintained the 3.5% interest rates for its savings accounts from 2003-11. In 2011, it was increased to 4% for all saving deposit accounts. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

Kumar said the rate cut had nothing to do with the impending Reserve Bank of India (RBI) monetary policy on 2 August 2017. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

Further, the bank had cut the marginal cost based lending rates (MCLR) by 90 basis points (bps) from 1 January 2017, on the strength of large inflows in savings and current accounts during the demonetisation period in November and December 2016. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

"There has been a significant outflow of CASA deposits since then. The revision in saving bank rate would enable the bank to maintain the MCLR at the existing rates, benefiting a large segment of retail borrowers in small and medium enterprise (SME), agriculture and affordable housing segments," SBI said. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

IT(The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions)
The Income Tax (I-T) Department has extended till 5 August 2017, the date for filing tax returns, from 31st July. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

In a tweet, the I-T Dept says, "In view of the difficulties faced by taxpayers, date for filing of Income Tax Returns for FY2016-17 has been extended to 5 August 2017."

With Monday as the last date for filing of ITRs, the I-T Department received complaints that a number of taxpayers were not able to log on to the e-filing portal due to huge rush during the day. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

The extension also comes in view of difficulties faced by taxpayers as quoting Aadhaar number was made mandatory for ITR filings from 1 July 2017.

"There are some complaints that taxpayers are not able to log on to the e-filing website of the I-T Department or not being able to link their Aadhaar numbers with permanent account numbers (PANs) because of different names reflected in PAN and Aadhaar database."

"While technical snags have already been removed, the main reason for the failure of taxpayers to log in is because of the last-minute rush and panic among those who have already logged in about disconnection," a Finance Ministry statement said.

In order to ease the situation, the government said for e-filing of returns, it would be sufficient, as of now, to quote the Aadhaar or the acknowledgement number of applied-for Aadhaar number in e-filing website.

"The actual linking of PAN with Aadhaar can be done subsequently, but any time before 31 August 2017. The returns will not be processed till this linkage is done," it said.

Japan financial markets (The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions)
Stocks mostly rose on Monday as investors awaited more corporate earnings reports. Japan's Nikkei index, however, sagged as a surge in the yen against the dollar weighed on exporters.
KEEPING SCORE: Germany's DAX gained 0.3 percent to 12,199 and the CAC 40 of France added 0.1 percent to 5,136. Britain's FTSE 100 gained 0.3 percent to 7,390. Dow futures gained 0.2 percent and S&P 500 futures edged 0.1 percent higher, auguring an upbeat start for the week on Wall Street.
EARNINGS WATCH: Earnings results from a little more than half of the companies in the S&P 500 have been published and most have been encouraging. Investors are keeping an eye out this week for more reports in Europe and Asia, where in Japan some 350 companies released results on Monday alone.
ANALYST COMMENT: "With 57 percent of the companies on the comprehensive S&P 500 index reported so far, it is unavoidable for us to discuss earnings performances. On a broad level we have seen both sales and earnings surprise largely match up to the strong Q1 performance, keeping the markets going," Jingyi Pan of IG said in a commentary. "The new week brings another one-fourth of the companies on the S&P 500 index which could see the focus slightly moderate and shift toward earnings here in Asia instead." CHINA FACTORY DATA: A manufacturing survey showed Chinese factory activity eased in July as demand for exports weakened. The monthly purchasing managers' index released Monday slipped to 51.4 last month from 51.7 in the previous month. The reading is based on a 100-point scale on which numbers above 50 indicate expansion. It was still the 12th straight month that factories reported expansion, according to the data compiled by the Federation of Logistics & Purchasing posted on China's official statistics website.
