Automakers Renault and Nissan say they will develop electric cars with a Chinese state-owned partner, adding to a series of tie-ups between global auto brands and local partners in the biggest electric vehicle market.
The venture Dongfeng Motor Corp. aims to develop a vehicle based on an SUV platform shared by Renault and Nissan, the companies announced Tuesday. Production is due to begin in 2019.
Global automakers are investing heavily to develop electric vehicles for China, responding to rising demand and government pressure on the industry to speed up technology development.
Chinese planners see electrics as a promising industry and a way to clean up smog-choked cities. They have supported sales with subsidies to buyers, while a proposed quota system will require automakers to meet targets for electric vehicle production or buy credits from competitors that do.
Sales of pure-electric and gasoline-electric hybrids in China rose 50 percent last year over 2015 to 336,000 vehicles, accounting for 40 percent of global demand. U.S. sales totaled 159,620.
Renault SA and Nissan Motor Corp. have a wide-ranging alliance to share technology and production that also includes Mitsubishi Motors Corp. and has more limited ties with other auto brands.
Dongfeng assembles vehicles for Nissan, Kia and other foreign brands and owns a share of France's PSA Peugeot Citroen. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions
"The establishment of the new joint venture with Dongfeng confirms our common commitment to develop competitive electric vehicles for the Chinese market," said Carlos Ghosn, chairman and CEO of the Renault-Nissan alliance, in a statement. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions
Ford Motor Co. announced last week it was looking at setting up a possible electric car venture with a Chinese partner. General Motors Co., Volkswagen AG and other brands also have announced plans to manufacture electric vehicles in China. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

Global Stocks In Retreat After North Korean Missile Test-The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

Japan financial markets (The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions)

Global stock markets and the dollar fell sharply Tuesday, as investors were rattled by North Korea's launch of a midrange ballistic missile that crossed over northern Japan and fell into the Pacific Ocean. The euro, which breached $1.20 for the first time since January 2015, was one of the major beneficiaries of the risk-averse mood across financial markets. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

KEEPING SCORE: In Europe, France's CAC 40 fell 1.3 percent to 5,011 while Germany's DAX slid 1.8 percent to 11,911. The FTSE 100 index of leading British shares was 1.2 percent lower at 7,314. U.S. stocks were poised for declines at the open with Dow futures and the broader S&P 500 futures down 0.6 percent. The dollar was also suffering from the risk averse mood in the markets, posting big falls against its major competitors.

MISSILE NEWS: The reason behind the risk-off mood in stock markets was the news overnight that North Korea had fired a midrange ballistic missile into the northern Pacific Ocean. South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said the missile traveled around 2,700 kilometers (1,677 miles) and reached a maximum height of 550 kilometers (341 miles) as it traveled over the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido. The distance and type of missile tested seemed designed to show that North Korea can back up a threat to target the U.S. territory of Guam, if it chooses to do so, while also establishing a potentially dangerous precedent that could see future missiles flying over Japan.

ANALYST TAKE: "Equities are firmly in the red after North Korea delivered its biggest provocation in two decades by firing a ballistic missile over Japan, adding fuel to the fires of geopolitical uncertainty," said Mike van Dulken, head of research at Accendo Markets. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

SAFE HAVENS: While stocks were suffering, traditional safe haven assets were in demand, including gold, which was up 0.8 percent at $1,325.30 an ounce. The Swiss franc was also in the ascendant, with the dollar down 1.2 percent at 0.9442 SFr. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

EURO STRONG TOO: Europe's single currency also enjoyed further solid gains amid the geopolitical uncertainty, rising above $1.20 for the first time since early 2015. The euro has be buoyant for a while now, benefiting from the stronger than anticipated economic recovery taking place in the 19-country eurozone as well as rising expectations that the European Central Bank will start to rein in its stimulus measures soon. Last Friday, the ECB's president, Mario Draghi, failed to engage in any talk about the strong euro, which could hurt exporters and prevent inflation from rising back to target as it keeps import costs down. Investors took that as a signal for further euro buying. By early afternoon London time, the euro was up 0.5 percent at $1.2042.

ASIA'S DAY: Asian investors largely held their nerve after the North Korea test, with Japan's benchmark Nikkei 225 closing down only 0.5 percent at 19,362.55. The Japanese yen was holding up well too as it often does in times of geopolitical stress — the dollar was down 0.7 percent at 108.49 yen. Elsewhere in Asia, Australia's S&P/ASX 200 dipped 0.7 percent to 5,669.00 while South Korea's Kospi lost 0.2 percent to 2,364.74. Hong Kong's Hang Seng shed 0.1 percent to 27,828.67, but the Shanghai Composite inched up 0.1 percent to 3,365.23.

STORM FEARS: U.S. trading had focused on the effects of Tropical Storm Harvey in the absence of other market-moving news. Large parts of the energy and petrochemical industries are based in the Houston area and companies with a lot of stores in the area stand to lose business. While gas price spikes will be temporary, other effects of the storm will last for years. The U.S. Federal Reserve might hesitate to raise interest rates if they think the storm will slow the economy significantly. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

ENERGY: Benchmark U.S. crude was down 4 cents at $46.53 a barrel, while Brent crude, the international standard, fell 20 cents to $51.22 a barrel. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

Major Indices (The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions)

Key Indian equity indices -- the NSE Nifty50 and the BSE Sensex -- traded on a higher note during mid-afternoon trade session on Monday as buying in capital goods, consumer durables and IT (information technology) stocks and a strong rupee lifted investors' sentiments. Intense buying was observed in index heavyweights like Infosys, Hero MotoCorp, Sun Pharma and Adani Ports, too, added to the upward trajectory of the key indices. On the NSE, there were 996 advances, 457 declines and 62 unchanged. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

Major Asian indices came under pressure in early Monday trade after the euro soared following Friday speeches from top central bankers. Oil markets, meanwhile, digested the impact of Hurricane Harvey, pointed out market analysts.

Reliance Capital Ltd, part of the Anil D Ambani-led Reliance Group, on Monday announced the record date for allotment of equity shares of Reliance Home Finance Ltd. In a statement issued by Reliance Capital said all persons who are shareholders of Reliance Capital as on September 6, will receive one free share of Reliance Home Finance for every share held in Reliance Capital. "The transfer was earlier approved by an overwhelming majority of 99.59 per cent votes in favour of the Scheme of Arrangement at the Tribunal-convened general shareholders meeting held on July 24, 2017, and other requisite approvals have duly been received," the statement said. Reliance Capital will hold a 51% stake in Reliance Home Finance, and the company will be adequately capitalised to grow the lending book multi-fold in future.  Reliance Capital shares closed at Rs788.05, up 1.39% on the NSE. Macro-economic data points, especially the country's quarterly economic growth figures, along with derivatives expiry are expected to influence the movement of equity indices during the week. According to market observers, investors' risk-taking appetite will also depend upon global cues, direction of foreign funds movement and any further development over divestment and consolidation of public sector undertakings. Main data points such as the ECI, quarterly GDP growth rate and fiscal deficit will have a major bearing on the equity markets. Apart from official data releases, automobile sales figures for August and stock-specific developments will continue to influence the equity markets. The Ministry of Commerce and Industry will release the Index of ECI (eight core industries) figures for August 2017. This will be followed by the release of the country's fiscal deficit and quarterly estimates of GDP growth for the first quarter of 2017-18. Subsequently, the monthly automobile sales figures and the Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) manufacturing data will be released on September 1. All these factors will be important in judging market trends during the week.

The Steel Authority of India Ltd. (SAIL) said the new and modern facility of IISCO Steel Plant (ISP) would facilitate the steel maker to increase its market share in long products to 10 per cent from the existing 7%. "ISP's new and modern plant will facilitate SAIL to take its market share in Long Products to 10% from the existing 7%," the steel maker said in a statement. "The plant has huge potential to capture newer market segments with its enriched products from the new mills. After modernisation, ISP boasts of a modern wire rod mill (WRM), universal section mill (USM) and bar mill capable of producing high quality products, it added. The Steel Authority of India shares closed at Rs61.50, up 1.32% on the BSE.

Global cues and massive outflow of foreign funds from the country's capital markets are expected to induce volatility in the Indian rupee during the week. Short-term volatility can be high as stock market remains choppy. This week, traders will focus on US jobs data, observed market analysts. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

India Chaina(The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions)
In a breakthrough ahead of the BRICS summit, India and China on Monday agreed to withdraw their troops from the disputed Doklam area, ending a nearly three-month standoff between the armies of the two countries that led to a sharp escalation in bilateral tensions.

The Indian External Affairs Ministry broke the news on the development on Monday morning, which was shortly followed by the Chinese Foreign Office confirming the disengagement.

The External Affairs Ministry statement said "In recent weeks, India and China have maintained diplomatic communication in respect of the incident at Doklam. During these communications, we were able to express our views and convey our concerns and interests".

"On this basis, expeditious disengagement of border personnel at face-off site at Doklam has been agreed to, and is ongoing." The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

Indian Army sources in New Delhi also confirmed that the process of disengagement was in progress. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

The decision to disengage their troops comes ahead of a crucial BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) summit being hosted by China on September 3-4, which Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to attend. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

The Chinese Foreign Ministry said that India has withdrawn its troops from Doklam but Chinese troops will "remain in the region" and exercise their "sovereignty over the region".

Its spokesperson Hua Chunying said that Chinese border troops will "continue to patrol in Donglong", which India refers to as Doklam, in the Sikkim sector.

"On the afternoon of August 28, the Indian side pulled back all the Indian troops and equipment to the Indian side of the boundary and the Chinese personnel have verified this," Hua said.

"The Chinese side will continue to exercise its sovereignty and uphold its territorial integrity in accordance with historical conventions," she added.

Asked if the disengagement was from both sides, Hua repeated the same statement.

This is in contrast to India's statement that both countries have agreed to "disengage" in Doklam.

The standoff began on June 16 when Indian troops stopped a People's Liberation Army contingent from building a road in Doklam, which is in the tri-junction of China-Bhutan-India. The Chinese side refused to withdraw, and instead accused India of transgressing into its territory. The Chinese side, especially the state media, since then has been on an offensive, and on occasions issued veiled threats of war. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

India has maintained that both sides should withdraw simultaneously for any dialogue on the issue, and asserted that war was not a solution.

Amidst the standoff, Prime Minister Modi met Chinese President Xi Jinping in Hamburg on the sidelines of the G20 summit, while National Security Advisor Ajit Doval held talks with his Chinese counterpart Yang Jiechi in Beijing on the sidelines of a BRICS security meet. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

Harvey Could Have Deep Impact On Texas Oil, US Economy-The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

28 August  2017

Massive flooding caused by Harvey along Texas' refinery-rich coast could have long-standing and far-reaching consequences for the state's oil and gas industry and the larger U.S. economy. The storm's remnants left much of Houston underwater on Sunday, and the National Weather Service says it's not over yet: Some parts of Houston and its suburbs could end up with as much as 50 inches (1.3 meters) of rain.
With the heavy precipitation expected to last for days, it's still unclear how bad the damage will be, but there is already evidence of widespread losses. Key oil and gas facilities along the Texas Gulf Coast have temporarily shut down, and flooding in the Houston and Beaumont areas could seriously pinch gasoline supplies. Companies operating in the Gulf of Mexico have evacuated drilling platforms and rigs, crimping the flow of oil and gas.
Experts believe gasoline prices could increase as much as 25 cents a gallon.
Harvey's toll on air travel in the U.S. is set to extend into Monday, with the tracking service FlightAware.com reporting that more than 1,400 flights already have been canceled. That's in addition to more than 2,000 canceled over the weekend.
Economy watchers were looking to oil futures markets Sunday night and stock trading in the U.S. Monday morning for further indications of fallout.
Here's what was known as of Sunday night: The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions
REFINERIES
Nearly a third of U.S. refining capacity sits in low-lying areas along the coast from Corpus Christi, Texas, to Lake Charles, Louisiana. Beyond the shutdown of refineries at risk of a direct strike from high winds, there's the threat of flooding and potential power outages for gasoline supplies.
Refinery outages continued to spread Sunday, with about 2.2 million barrels per day of refining capacity down or being brought down, according to analysts at S&P Global.
Valero Energy Corp., whose two big Corpus Christi refineries escaped damage, said it was working with federal and Texas agencies and its business partners to determine what infrastructure was needed to resume refinery operations.
Even before Harvey hit, the prospect of supply disruptions sent gasoline futures to $1.74 a gallon, their highest level since April, before they retreated to around $1.67 by Friday afternoon. At the pump, experts see gasoline increasing 10 cents to 25 cents a gallon.
Given the strictures faced by the refineries, "This is the dominoes starting to fall," Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst for Gas Buddy, said Sunday. "This is sort of slowly turning out to be the worst-case scenario." The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions
OIL AND GAS
Companies have evacuated workers from oil platforms in the Gulf of Mexico. The U.S. Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement said Sunday that workers had been removed from 105 of the 737 manned platforms used to pump oil and gas from beneath the Gulf.
The agency estimated that platforms accounting for about 22 percent of oil production and 26 percent of natural gas output in the Gulf had been shut down.
"After the storm has passed, facilities will be inspected," the agency said in a news release. "Once all standard checks have been completed, production from undamaged facilities will be brought back on line immediately. Facilities sustaining damage may take longer to bring back on line." The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

SHIPPING
The shipping industry also is expected to be disrupted by the worst hurricane to hit the Texas coast in more than 50 years. Shipping terminals along the Texas coast shut down as the storm approached. Port operations in Corpus Christi and Galveston closed, and the port of Houston said container terminals and general cargo facilities closed around midday Friday.
Rates increased for carrying freight between the Gulf and the U.S. East Coast. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

TRAVEL
More than 1,400 flight cancellations are reported for Monday, according to FlightAware.
Houston's two airports were closed to all flights except those connected to relief efforts. Houston Bush Intercontinental Airport was not expected to reopen Monday until noon at the earliest. Houston International Airport was scheduled to remain closed until Wednesday morning.
Airlines were offering customers the chance to reschedule trips that would take them to Houston, San Antonio or Austin from Friday through the weekend. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

UTILITIES
Researchers at Texas A&M University estimated that the storm would knock out power for at least 1.25 million people in Texas. They said the hardest-hit areas will include Corpus Christi, which is on the coast, and San Antonio, which is about 140 miles (225 kilometers) inland. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

INSURANCE
A firm that does forecasts for insurance companies expects wind-damage claims in the low billions of dollars, and possibly reaching as high as $6 billion.
Risk Management Solutions Inc. said storm surges and inland flooding could be an even bigger source of losses. If the firm is correct, that would put homeowners and the government-backed National Flood Insurance Program at risk.
The flood program is run by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which owes the Treasury about $23 billion in funds borrowed to cover the cost of past disasters, according to a recent report by the U.S. Government Accountability Office.
Homeowner policies offered by insurance companies typically don't cover flood damage, yet a relatively small percentage of homeowners have flood insurance through the federal program.

Property data firm CoreLogic estimated that insured losses for home and commercial properties, as of Friday, would be $1 billion to $2 billion from wind and storm- surge damage. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

European Stocks Weighed Down By Euro As US Assesses Harvey-The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

Japan financial markets (The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions)

European stock markets fell modestly Monday as the euro's ascent following a meeting of global bankers in Jackson Hole, Wyoming stoked concerns over the economic recovery across the 19-country eurozone while investors on Wall Street awaited damage assessments from Tropical Storm Harvey, which battered Texas' refinery-rich Gulf Coast and sent gasoline futures spiking. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions
KEEPING SCORE: In Europe, France's CAC 40 was down 0.2 percent to 5,099 while Germany's DAX fell 0.2 percent to 12,149. British markets were closed for a public holiday. Wall Street was poised for a steady opening with Dow futures and the broader S&P 500 futures unchanged.
STORMY WEATHER: Incessant rain from Harvey, which slammed ashore as a strong hurricane late last week, has submerged much of Houston and shut down Texas's oil and gas industry. It's unclear how bad the damage is to facilities along the state's Gulf Coast but preliminary signs indicate widespread losses, which will have implications for the U.S. economy and oil and gas prices. Gasoline futures trimmed earlier gains but were still at their highest level this year, up 4.4 percent to $1.74 a gallon, while crude futures were mixed. S&P Global analysts said about 2.2 million barrels per day of refining capacity was down or being brought down by Sunday.
NO SURPRISES: The gatherings of central bankers in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, was last week's big economic event but investors found no surprises in speeches by the Federal Reserve's Janet Yellen and the European Central Bank's Mario Draghi. There was nothing to change investors' expectations that the Fed will continue to gradually raise interest rates and prepare to trim its $4.5 billion balance sheet. Investors were now looking ahead to economic data releases due later this week, including China's purchasing managers' index on Thursday and U.S jobs data on Friday. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions
CURRENCIES: The euro was at $1.1936, off earlier highs that took the currency to its strongest level in more than two and a half years. The currency continued to rise after jumping Friday during Draghi's speech. He didn't address the financial health of the eurozone, but investors took that as a sign of confidence in the continent's economy. A stronger euro makes European exports more costly for foreign buyers. The dollar fell to 109.19 Japanese yen from 109.36 yen on Friday. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions
MARKET VIEW: "All of this is bad news for European stocks, particularly the export-heavy DAX, and we could see further moderation for European stocks at the start of this week," said Kathleen Brooks, research director at City Index. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions
ASIA'S DAY: Japan's benchmark Nikkei 225 index ended practically unchanged at 19,449.90 and South Korea's Kospi lost 0.4 percent to 2,370.30. Hong Kong's Hang Seng rose less than 0.1 percent to 27,863.29 and the Shanghai Composite in mainland China added 0.9 percent to 3,362.65. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 shed 0.6 percent to 5,709.90. Taiwan's benchmark rose and indexes in Southeast Asia were mixed.

ENERGY: Benchmark U.S. crude fell 42 cents to $47.45 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Brent crude, the international standard, rose 30 cents to $52.71 per barrel. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions
