Oil producers (The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions)

India is aiming to drive harder bargains with global oil producers, including Saudi Arabia, during bilateral meetings at a conference of energy ministers this week, officials said, leveraging its strength as the world's third-biggest crude importer.
Key producers from the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), threatened by the rising output from new and non-OPEC countries, are trying to secure a foothold in India where refining capacity is set to surge to 8 million barrels per day (bpd) by 2030 from 5 million bpd.
An official from India's oil ministry and two officials from the country's state-run energy firms said they are hoping to advance talks with Saudi Arabia and Nigeria for crude supplies at the meeting of the International Energy Forum that India is co-hosting with China and South Korea this week.
"The world recognises the size of India‘s market, its appetite. We want suppliers to look at India more favourably than in the past. We want the agreements to be more transparent and fair," Indian Oil Minister Dharmendra Pradhan told Reuters on Tuesday. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions
Such demands reflect a new confidence in India as a driver of global energy growth and are a far cry from earlier summits when oil ministry officials and the executives of state oil firms would plead for more crude oil supplies, said Sri Paravaikkarasu, head of East of Suez Oil at consultancy FGE.
"Now Indian officials go to these summits and ask producers for incentives. It's a big change," she said. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions
Some concessions are already coming.
Iran has offered to increase a discount on freight prices to Indian state refiners to double its sales to the companies, which control about one-third of India's refining capacity. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions
Saudi Aramco raised the credit limit for some Indian refiners last year so that they could lift more crude without providing explicit financial guarantees.
India's footprint in global energy markets will increase "materially" from 2018 to 2040, making it the largest growth market for global energy, BP Plc said in its energy outlook report in February.
Indian state oil executives say there is now a more balanced relationship with suppliers. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions
"Our ties with key oil suppliers are moving towards collaboration level rather than just buyer-seller," said M. K. Surana, chairman of Hindustan Petroleum Corp.
India last year began buying oil from the United States to cut its dependence on the Middle East, whose share of overall imports fell to 64.1 percent in the fiscal year of 2016/17 from about 80 percent in the 2007/08 fiscal year, government data showed. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions
"America as an alternate source can give us better negotiating power with the Middle East," R. Ramachandran, the head of refineries for Bharat Petroleum Corp Ltd, said. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

India's Jet Airways Ltd said late on Tuesday it had entered into an agreement with Boeing Co for the purchase of 75 Boeing 737 MAX narrowbody jets. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions
In an announcement to the stock exchange, Jet Airways did not say whether the agreement was a formal order or a non-binding memorandum of understanding. Boeing did not respond immediately to a request for comment.
The jets would be worth $8.8 billion at list prices, although airlines typically receive a significant discount from manufacturers.
Indian airlines are scrambling to add more jets to meet demand for more domestic and international flights, making it one of the most targeted sales markets for Boeing and European rival Airbus SE.
Domestic Indian passenger traffic increased by 17.9 percent in January from a year earlier, marking the 41st consecutive month of double-digit growth, according to the International Air Transport Association.
Jet Airways CEO Vinay Dube last month told reporters the airline was hoping to close the deal to buy 75 narrowbody jets by the end of March.

China financial markets (The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions)

Global stock markets rose Monday amid uncertainty about an escalating U.S.-Chinese tariff dispute after President Donald Trump said a settlement was possible but his advisers said other nations might add to pressure on Beijing.

KEEPING SCORE: Germany's DAX rose 0.5 percent to 12,303.24 and France's CAC 40 advanced 0.2 percent to 5,270.81. London's FTSE 100 slipped less than 0.1 percent to 7,178.19. On Friday, the DAX lost 0.5 percent, the CAC 40 fell 0.3 percent and the FTSE 100 declined 0.2 percent. On Wall Street, the future for the Dow Jones industrial average rose 0.7 percent and that for the Standard & Poor's 500 was up 0.6 percent. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

TRADE TENSIONS: Trump said Washington and Beijing can settle their tariff dispute but his economic adviser, Larry Kudlow, said a "coalition of the willing" — including Canada, much of Europe and Australia — was being formed to pressure China. Kudlow said while Washington hoped to avoid taking action, Trump "was not bluffing." Beijing and Washington have threatened to raise tariffs on $50 billion worth of each other's goods. Trump said the U.S. list might be increased by an additional $100 billion of goods, which prompted China's government to say it would "counterattack with great strength."

ANALYST'S TAKE: "The trade tariffs cloud looms into the new week following last Friday's gyrations as President Donald Trump ramped up the tensions with newly proposed tariffs," said Jingyi Pan of IG in a report. "Despite conciliatory messages put through over the weekend, investors are expected to remain on edge at the start of the week with more to look for from China."

ASIA'S DAY: The Shanghai Composite Index rose 0.2 percent to 3,138.29 and Tokyo's Nikkei 225 advanced 0.5 percent to 21,678.26. Hong Kong's Hang Seng climbed 1.3 percent to 30,229.58 and Seoul's Kospi added 0.6 percent to 2,444.08. Sydney's S&P-ASX 200 gained 0.3 percent to 5,808.70 and India's Sensex advanced 0.4 percent to 33,772.50. Benchmarks in New Zealand, Taiwan and Southeast Asia also rose. Caterpillar, a construction equipment maker, slid 3.5 percent and aircraft manufacturer Boeing lost 3.1 percent. The Dow dropped 2.3 percent, the S&P lost 2.2 percent and the Nasdaq composite slid 2.3 percent.
