Responding to the festival spirits, automakers recorded higher volumes during October 2016 with experts seeing this trend to continue over next few months. Utility vehicles and tractors continue to lead the segment, while lower exports dragged down overall sales in the passenger car segment during the festival month. India's largest passenger carmaker Maruti Suzuki India Ltd (MSIL) closed October selling 1.34 lakh units, including 1.24 lakh units in domestic markets and exports of 10,029 units. In October last year, MSIL recorded sales of 1.34 lakh units, including 1.21 lakh units sold in domestic market and exports of 13,146 units. The company, a unit of Japanese Suzuki Motor Corp, saw sales declining in its mini (Alto, WagonR), compact (Swift, Ritz, Celerio, Baleno, Dzire) super compact (Dzire Tour) and van (Omni, Eeco) segments. On the other hand, sales of its utility vehicles like Gypsy, Ertiga, S-Cross, Vitara, and Brezza, almost doubled to 18,008 units in October from 9,435 units sold during same month last year.

Similarly Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) recorded marginal growth in domestic market, while its exports remained almost static. During the prime festival month, the company sold 50,016 units in domestic passenger car market compared with 47,105 sold a year ago. Its passenger car exports declined, albeit marginally, to 14,356 units from 14,686 units in October 2015.

In a statement, YK Koo, Managing Director and Chief Executive of HMIL said, "Hyundai achieved the highest and fastest domestic sales of 50,000 units mark within 15 months from the earlier milestone of 40,000 units. Hyundai with a highest-ever domestic volume of 50,016 units registered record cumulative sales of 64,372 units in October 2016." The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

On its part, Tata Motors Ltd, the country's largest vehicle manufacturer, said during the festival month, it sold 16,311 passenger vehicles up from 12,747 units during October 2015. Tata Motors said it closed October 2016 with total sales of 52,813 units as against 43,486 units sold during same month a year ago.

Utility vehicles major Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd (M&M) logged a marginal growth in its passenger and commercial vehicle sales in October due to increased export as compared to the numbers sold during same month in 2015. M&M said it sold 52,008 units, including exports, during the festival month, compared with 51,383 units a year ago period. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

On the other hand, M&M's tractor business logged 61% growth. In October, the company sold 45,177 tractors (domestic 43,826 units, exports 1,351 units) as against 28,081 units (domestic 27,280 units, exports 801 units) sold in same month last year.

Other players like Nissan Motor India reported domestic sales of 6,108 vehicles versus 3,246 units sold in October 2015. Volkswagen Passenger Cars India says it sold 5,534 units last month as compared to 3,255 units in the corresponding month in 2015. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

In the two-wheeler segment, high capacity motorbike maker Eicher Motors Ltd increased its sales volumes by 33% to 59,127 units compared to 44,522 units sold during October 2015. Bulk of the sales for Eicher Motors came from two-wheelers with engine capacity up to 350cc (55,188 units) while vehicles with more than 350cc engine capacity accounted for 3,939 units sold last month.

Bajaj Auto Ltd, the two and three-wheeler maker, however, had a lacklustre festival month as its sales remained flat. Its two-wheeler sales declined marginally to 3.07 lakh units on October 2016 from 3.08 units while commercial vehicle sales increased to 48,276 units from 44,089 units, same month a year ago. The slide in exports of motorcycles (94,895 units in October 2016 from 1.06 lakh units last year) pulled down the monthly sales numbers for the company. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

India Yamaha Motor, a subsidiary of Japanese Yamaha Motor Corp, reported a 22% increase in its domestic sales at 86,428 units during October 2016. The two-wheeler maker had sold 70,812 units during same month a year ago, the company said in a statement.
