The domestic equity market slipped
into the red on Wednesday as investors remained cautious ahead of the outcome
of the FOMC meeting. The 30-share BSE Sensex was down 94.98 points at 26602.84
and the 50-share NSE Nifty fell 39.35 points to 8182.45. The broader markets
also lost shine in last couple hours of trade, with the BSE Midcap and Smallcap
indices falling 0.8 percent each on weak breadth. About two shares declined for

The US central bank is widely
expected to raise interest rates by 25-50 bps, fear of which dented investor
sentiments across global markets. Any hint that the Fed may move more
aggressively would likely send the dollar higher and jolt emerging markets.

The India VIX (Volatility) index was
up 4.2% at 16.5. Out of 1508 stocks traded on the NSE, 1048 declined and 391
advanced today. A total of 17 stocks registered a fresh 52-week high in trade
today, whereas 14 stocks touched a new 52-week low on the NSE. The Indian Rupee
was trading at 67.53 per dollar. Gold was trading at Rs27, 611 per 10 grams and

Wholesale inflation rate in November
moderated to 3.15 percent from 3.39 percent in October as cash crunch has
depressed the consumer demand. Even retail inflation slowed sharply to 3.63
percent from 4.2 percent, which may pave the way for rate cuts in the upcoming

Stocks in China ended at one-month
lows after the regulators pledged to restrict risky investments by insurers. In
addition, investors remained cautious ahead of the outcome of the Fed’s
rate-setting meeting. The blue-chip CSI300 index fell 0.8 per cent to 3,378,
while the Shanghai Composite Index lost 0.5 per cent to 3,140. Honk Kong stocks
closed flat on Wednesday. The Hang Seng index was unchanged at 22,456, while
the China Enterprises Index lost 0.1 per cent to close at 9,706. European
stocks were subdued in opening trade.
