Stressing on the need for total safety management, Railway Minister Piyush Goyal wants to take the Indian Railways towards 'zero accident regime'. Goyal reiterated his agenda during a recent roundtable discussion with Japanese delegation that visited India as part of the memorandum of cooperation (MoC) signed between the two countries.

Responding to Ministry of Railway’s request, Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) deputed a team of their Railway experts to assess incidents of rail breakage and suggest measures to improve safety in train operations. The MoC envisages cooperation in Rail Safety on area such as maintenance of Track, including welding, rail inspection, and track circuit and rolling stock maintenance.

The Railways is also asked to give highest priority to passenger safety. The Ministry has directed all staff of Railway Protection Force (RPF) and traveling ticket examiners (TTEs) to be in proper uniform while on duty for bringing transparency. Taking cognisance of the Rahul Singh death case, the Railways has warned RPF not to check tickets, which is function of TTEs. "Only Ticket Checkers (TCs) or Travelling Ticket Examiner (TTE) can check tickers from passengers at railway station and in trains," the Railways has said in a notification.

Last month, the Ministry appointed a five member Committee consisting of senior officials to improve safety of staff and workers, working on Railway worksites, especially tracks.

The Railways is also working towards, 'Mission Electrification', a strategic shift to undertake electrification of complete railway network at a rapid pace. "Indian Railways is working with a renewed attitude and confidence. The mindset of Indian Railways has changed. Indian Railways is working with 'will do/can do' spirit, for the government, development is a positive agenda. Indian Railways is working in a mission mode and coming up with solutions to the problems. Indian Railways is working with a commitment to serve in a time bound manner for the common people. For the common people, Railways is the preferred mode of transport and 13 lakh Railwaymen have dedicated themselves to serve with commitment. We are working in time bound manner, skillfully, effectively to transform Indian Railways truly to a world class, safe and modern transporter," Goyal had said while speaking at the International Conference on Green Initiatives & Railway Electrification.

Interestingly, the Railways is also using social media, especially Twitter for effective communication as well as for business. In September, when Amul asked the Railways about providing it a refrigerated parcel van to transport butter across the country, the Ministry immediately responded. The Railway Ministry’s Twitter handle @RailMinIndia replied, “IR will be utterly butterly delighted to get the taste of India to every Indian.” On 11 November, the first refrigerator van with 17 metric tonnes of Amul butter was flagged off from Palanpur to Delhi.

Several times, it is found that commuters going outstation are clueless about the status of their running train, especially if it is running on time or delayed. To overcome this issue, the Railways has started SMS facility from 3 November 2017, with trains like Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Tejas and Gatiman covered in initial phase. All passengers who have booked tickets in these trains will receive an SMS giving status of trains that are running late. Passengers would receive these SMS throughout their journey on their mobile numbers given at the time of booking the ticket both for e-ticket and PRS (counter) ticket. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions
