Major Indices (The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions)
Positive global cues, coupled with a marginally strong rupee and buying in automobile, oil and gas, and capital goods stocks lifted the Indian equity markets on Thursday. The key indices traded in the green during the mid-afternoon trade session on the back of short covering -- breaking the streak of three consecutive sessions of losses. On the NSE, there were 1,059 advances, 563 declines and 304 unchanged.  On the BSE, there were 1,687 advances, 1,112 declines and 204 unchanged. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

The CNX Nifty, which opened on a firm note tracking positive global cues, currently traded with firm sentiments due to short covering. Bearish USD/INR futures prices also supported the recovery of the Indian equity markets at current levels. IT (information technology), banking, pharma, auto, oil-gas and textile stocks traded in the green due to short covering, while media-entertainment and telecom sector stocks also traded with firm sentiments due to continuous buying support, according to market analysts.

European shares fell in early trade on Thursday as investors assessed the risks to Donald Trump's stimulus plans, just before a vote in the U.S. Congress on his healthcare bill. The U.S. vote, which could come as early as Thursday, is considered a key test of Trump's ability to push through legislation, including business-friendly tax cuts. Expectations of a big economic stimulus in the world's largest economy have helped fuel a global rally in equity markets.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Thursday said there was no reason to worry about the curbs on H1B visas or the job security of Indian IT professionals working in the US for the time being as the Indian government is in talks with the US regarding this. "Currently there are four bills in the US Congress about curbs on H1B visas. We are engaged (in a dialogue) with the US at very high level regarding this... We are making all efforts (through diplomatic channels) to ensure these bills are not passed," Sushma said in the Rajya Sabha. "So there is no reason to worry about it as of now," she added. The Minister pointed out that even before Donald Trump became President, there had been a "flip-flop" in the H1B visa policy by the US. "In 1990 when H1B visas were first introduced, the cap was 65,000. In 2000, it was raised to 1,95,000 for three years. In 2004 the number of these visas was again reversed to 65,000 by the US. So there has been a flip-flop on this policy even before Donald Trump government," she said. The Minister also informed the house that the visa facility extended to the spouse of the Indian professionals has not been withdrawn by the US so far. S & P BSE Information Technology Index closed at 10,522.91, up 0.58%. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

With a unified pan-India market slated to become a reality through implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) from July 1, the removal of octroi barriers between states would help make exports more competitive, Commerce Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Thursday. "GST gives a feeling that market in India is one now, and there are no barriers between regions or provinces," Sitharaman told reporters here on the sidelines of a trade facilitation workshop. "Even within the country, the value chains which will get integrated, will have a simpler and straightforward flow and, therefore, it should make exports more competitive rather than expensive," she said. The stock markets are likely to be on an upward trajectory when such tax reforms are implemented by the government. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

"On March 22, 2017, HDFC and IREDA (Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency) successfully raised Rs1,498 crore and Rs200 crore respectively by issuing bonds on private placement basis using the BSE Bond platform." According to the statement, 383 issues of bonds by 68 issuers have successfully raised Rs200,111 crore using the BSE Debt platforms during the financial year 2016-17 till March 22, 2017. Echoing State Bank of India chief Arundhati Bhattacharya's views, Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Deputy Governor S.S. Mundra on Thursday expressed concern over farm loan waiver affecting credit discipline. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

"The RBI's views has always been that farm loan waiver affects credit discipline," Mundra told reporters at the launch of Bandhan Bank's branch here.

On March 15, Bhattacharya had expressed reservation over assurances and demand for complete farm loans waiver, coming from different quarters. The following day, Congressmen staged a protest outside the SBI headquarters at Nariman Point in Mumbai to protest.

Those making the demand for loan waiver include Maharashtra's opposition parties and the ruling ally Shiv Sena, besides the Karnataka government, while assurances to this effect have been made in Punjab and Uttar Pradesh. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

Bhattacharya too said it will disturb credit discipline among borrowers, since they will keep expecting more such waivers in future and then those (future) loans will remain unpaid.

On resolution of the non-performing assets (NPAs) issue, Mundra said discussions were on in this regard. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

"A number of resolution mechanisms have been given to banks from time to time. Variety of cases will require use of different instruments," the RBI senior officer said.

A former senior bureaucrat has warned that the removal of the cap on company donations to political parties and allowing companies to keep the names of the parties confidential will spell disaster for the concept of free and fair elections. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

E.A.S. Sarma, a former Secretary to the Indian government, said the latest amendment to the Companies Act will open floodgates to the company donations to political parties and taint the country's elections. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday, he said the latest Finance Act, introduced by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and approved with little discussion by the NDA-dominated Parliament, had belied his hope of reforms to cleanse the electoral process.

The amendment removed the cap on company donations and it allows the companies to keep the names of the political parties confidential in their accounts.

The retired IAS officer said there will be free-for-all for both domestic and foreign companies to manipulate the electoral system. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

"It is ironic that your government should once again choose the Finance Act as the vehicle for the backdoor introduction of such a regressive and potentially dangerous proposal to be approved by the Parliament with inadequate discussion," wrote Sarma, who has been fighting for electoral and democratic reforms. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

"I appeal to your conscience not to open the floodgates to company donations to political parties, that too anonymous donations, as such a step will spell disaster for the very concept of free and fair elections that lies at the core of our Constitution," he said.

Sarma referred to the letters written to Modi last year suggesting a number of reforms to be undertaken by the government if it was earnest about its campaign against corruption.

Sarma had called for revoking the retrospective amendment to the Foreign Contributions Regulation Act, 2010 (FCRA 2010), made through the backdoor of the Finance Act, 2016, that opened the floodgates to foreign company donations to political parties.

He had also stressed the need to amend the Companies Act to prohibit companies from giving donations to political parties. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

Shah Rukh Khan's (The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions)
The Income Tax Appellate Tribunal here has rejected Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan's claim and ordered that he must include the notional rent accruing from his villa in Dubai in his income tax returns filed in India. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

However, the ITAT bench comprising Amit Shukla and G.S. Pannu ruled that the credit for taxes Shah Rukh paid in the UAE, if any, would be allowed as per the law.

The actor had submitted before the tibunal that since income from his immovable asset in Dubai would be taxed in the UAE as per the India-UAE tax treaty, he did not offer it for taxation in India. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

Rejecting his claim, the ITAT asked the IT Department to rework Shah Rukh's final liability under the head 'Income from house property'.

In 2007, the developers of the famous Palm Jumeirah project had gifted to Shah Rukh the luxurious sea-front villa on a 14,000 square feet plot in Dubai.

A year later, Shah Rukh took possession of the property, comprising the 8,500 square feet six-bedroom villa with an exclusive beach and a private pool.

For the FY 2008-2009, the IT Department estimated the deemed rental value to be around Rs 9.6 million and after the standard deduction of 30 per cent, Shah Rukh was taxed for nearly Rs 60.72 lakh. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

When Shah Rukh challenged this, the IT Commissioner (Appeals) upheld the department's action on the basis of a clarification issued by the Central Board of Direct Taxes vide a notification dated August 28, 2008. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

The notification said that when a tax treaty entered into by India states that income of a tax resident of India 'may be taxed' in the other country, such income shall be first included in his taxable income in India. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

Subsequently, relief could be granted for taxes, if any, paid overseas, according to the notification. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

Shah Rukh filed an appeal with the ITAT, which has now been rejected. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

The major indices of the Indian stock markets suffered a sharp correction on Wednesday and closed with losses of around 1% over Tuesday’s close. The trends of the major indices in the course of Wednesday’s trading are given in the table below: The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

Major Indices (The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions)
Indian equity markets slipped during the mid-afternoon trade session on Wednesday as negative global cues and selling pressure in automobile, consumer durables and banking stocks subdued investors' sentiments. Growing concerns over US President Donald Trump's ability to implement his economic policies spooked the global markets. The US stocks slipped over 1.14-1.83% on Tuesday, following which almost all major Asian indices traded deeply in the red early on Wednesday.  On the NSE, there were 400 advances, 1,070 declines and 56 unchanged. On the BSE, there were 970 advances, 1,837 declines and 195 unchanged.

The CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) has arrested two senior State Bank of India (SBI) officials for misappropriating funds of around Rs12.40 lakh by violating the RBI (Reserve Bank of India) guidelines imposed during demonetisation, an official said on Wednesday. Senior Special Assistant M. Sultan Mohiuddin and Deputy Manager (Operations) I.J. Raja Sekhar, employed at SBI's Buchireddypalem branch in Andhra Pradesh's Nellore district, were held during a raid conducted at their official and residential premises on Tuesday.  The Central Bureau of Investigation also recovered several incriminating documents. A CBI official said the bank officials were booked for criminal conspiracy, cheating, criminal breach of trust and under the Prevention of Corruption Act. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

Coal India Ltd (CIL), which contributes 84% of the country's production, is likely to end the current fiscal with a shortfall against its annual production target for 2016-17, analysts and industry stakeholders say. They, however, predicted that the production and sales are expected to achieve "marginal growth" over the last fiscal. During 2016-17, the miner set a target of producing 598.61 million tonnes (mt) of coal with an 11.11% growth over the 538.75 mt produced in 2015-16. Its sales were at 534.50 mt in the last fiscal. "Coal India is expected to end the year with an around 550 million tonnes of production, thereby missing the annual target by 40-50 million tonnes. The miner needs to produce about 90 million tonnes in March to touch even 570-578 million tonnes as envisaged by the Coal Ministry. This is quiet unlikely," said market analysts. So far, the average monthly production in the current fiscal is around 45 million tonnes, he said. "Production has been impacted due to lower dispatch. Higher production without growing dispatch will add more to inventories and off-take growth till February was around 1.6% and I don't think it would change significantly in March," he said. CIL shares closed at Rs292.15, up 0.14% on the NSE. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

Tokyo shares tumbled on Wednesday on concerns over implementation of US President Donald Trump's economic policies and reports on North Korean missile launches. The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average shed 390.51 points, or 2.01 per cent, from Tuesday to 19,065.37. Decliners were led by insurance, securities and marine transportation issues.

US stocks reversed early gains to end sharply lower on Tuesday, amid growing concerns over US President Donald Trump's ability to implement his economic policies. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 237.85 points, or 1.14%, to 20,668.01. The S&P 500 lost 29.45 points, or 1.24%, to 2,344.02. The Nasdaq Composite Index plunged 107.70 points, or 1.83%, to 5,793.83. Worries about the country's health care reform weighed on the market as House Republicans are expected to vote on repealing and replacing the Affordable Care Acton (ACA) Thursday. Analysts thought that the enthusiasm has come off the boil as a lot of Trump policies got mired in legislative process.

Ookla says Airtel speedtest based on Q3-Q4 data, Jio reacts-The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

21 March 2017

A day after Reliance Jio lodged a complaint with the advertising watchdog against broadband tester Ookla declaring Airtel as the "Fastest Mobile Network" in India, Ookla on Tuesday clarified that test was based on third and fourth quarter data of 2016.

On Monday, Reliance Jio had complained to the Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) against Ookla's testing. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

"Ookla named Airtel as the 'Fastest Mobile Network' in India based on data from Q3 and Q4 of 2016. When analysing markets, like India, we take many factors into consideration, including dual SIM devices, network technology, device types and more," said Jamie Steven, COO, Speedtest by Ookla, in a statement. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

"In addition to what the user sees on their mobile application as they take a test in real time, we apply a rigorous methodology while aggregating the data which uses a variety of internal data sources that control potential variability in the market," he said.

"We have taken dual SIM information into consideration and fully stand behind Airtel being named 'India's Fastest Mobile Network'," Steven said.

"Ookla has baldly stated that they stand by their results and has skirted the main issue. We will initiate actions as we deem fit at appropriate forums. The public should not be misled by these false claims based on the Ookla results," said Reliance Jio spokesperson on Tuesday.

"The claim of Airtel that it is India's fastest network is false, misleading and incorrect. The claim is being made by Airtel acting in a mala fide manner in collusion with Ookla LLC, who profess to be experts in the domain space of testing mobile internet speed," stated the letter sent by Reliance Jio to the ASCI, the advertising watchdog on Monday.

Meanwhile, Rajiv Mathrani, Chief Brand Officer, Bharti Airtel, said in a statement on Tuesday: "We are rather amused by the allegations being made against our campaign. We believe that this is a deliberate attempt to malign our brand and misguide customers through a campaign of misinformation, which is something we now come across on a regular basis, in particular, on social media platforms." The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

"The core issue is that the speedtest results are attributed to the primary SIM even though the SIM for which the data speedtest is conducted is the secondary SIM in the case of dual-SIM phones," said Jio spokesperson on Tuesday.

"In India, more than 90 per cent of 4G phones are dual-SIM. Therefore, there is no guarantee that the speed which is attributed to Airtel is of the Airtel data network. We are surprised that Ookla in its press release has not talked about this issue even though they had acknowledged the blunder to us earlier," the spokesperson stated.

Newcomer Reliance Jio, which has over 100 million subscribers, has also separately served a legal notice to Ookla for what it has termed as its "flawed" test.

Jio told ASCI that Ookla -- which had dubbed Airtel as "Officially The Fastest Network" -- does not have any accreditation from the Indian government.

"Without prejudice to the above, in any event, the way the award is being projected misleads the public into believing that Airtel has the fastest network today, that is when the advertisements are being aired/published," the letter said. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions
