Major Indices (The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions)
Indian equity markets slipped during the mid-afternoon trade session on Wednesday as negative global cues and selling pressure in automobile, consumer durables and banking stocks subdued investors' sentiments. Growing concerns over US President Donald Trump's ability to implement his economic policies spooked the global markets. The US stocks slipped over 1.14-1.83% on Tuesday, following which almost all major Asian indices traded deeply in the red early on Wednesday.  On the NSE, there were 400 advances, 1,070 declines and 56 unchanged. On the BSE, there were 970 advances, 1,837 declines and 195 unchanged.

The CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) has arrested two senior State Bank of India (SBI) officials for misappropriating funds of around Rs12.40 lakh by violating the RBI (Reserve Bank of India) guidelines imposed during demonetisation, an official said on Wednesday. Senior Special Assistant M. Sultan Mohiuddin and Deputy Manager (Operations) I.J. Raja Sekhar, employed at SBI's Buchireddypalem branch in Andhra Pradesh's Nellore district, were held during a raid conducted at their official and residential premises on Tuesday.  The Central Bureau of Investigation also recovered several incriminating documents. A CBI official said the bank officials were booked for criminal conspiracy, cheating, criminal breach of trust and under the Prevention of Corruption Act. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

Coal India Ltd (CIL), which contributes 84% of the country's production, is likely to end the current fiscal with a shortfall against its annual production target for 2016-17, analysts and industry stakeholders say. They, however, predicted that the production and sales are expected to achieve "marginal growth" over the last fiscal. During 2016-17, the miner set a target of producing 598.61 million tonnes (mt) of coal with an 11.11% growth over the 538.75 mt produced in 2015-16. Its sales were at 534.50 mt in the last fiscal. "Coal India is expected to end the year with an around 550 million tonnes of production, thereby missing the annual target by 40-50 million tonnes. The miner needs to produce about 90 million tonnes in March to touch even 570-578 million tonnes as envisaged by the Coal Ministry. This is quiet unlikely," said market analysts. So far, the average monthly production in the current fiscal is around 45 million tonnes, he said. "Production has been impacted due to lower dispatch. Higher production without growing dispatch will add more to inventories and off-take growth till February was around 1.6% and I don't think it would change significantly in March," he said. CIL shares closed at Rs292.15, up 0.14% on the NSE. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

Tokyo shares tumbled on Wednesday on concerns over implementation of US President Donald Trump's economic policies and reports on North Korean missile launches. The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average shed 390.51 points, or 2.01 per cent, from Tuesday to 19,065.37. Decliners were led by insurance, securities and marine transportation issues.

US stocks reversed early gains to end sharply lower on Tuesday, amid growing concerns over US President Donald Trump's ability to implement his economic policies. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 237.85 points, or 1.14%, to 20,668.01. The S&P 500 lost 29.45 points, or 1.24%, to 2,344.02. The Nasdaq Composite Index plunged 107.70 points, or 1.83%, to 5,793.83. Worries about the country's health care reform weighed on the market as House Republicans are expected to vote on repealing and replacing the Affordable Care Acton (ACA) Thursday. Analysts thought that the enthusiasm has come off the boil as a lot of Trump policies got mired in legislative process.

Two and three wheeler major TVS Motor Company Ltd's agreement to make high powered motorcycles for Germany's BMW has come to fruition with the Indian company starting to ship out BMW branded 310cc bikes, said a senior company official.

He also said TVS Motor Company would invest around Rs 350 crore next fiscal towards expansion of capacity, launch one new model each of scooter and motorcycle are some of the targets for 2017-18. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

In 2013, TVS Motor and BMW signed an agreement to jointly develop motorcycles in the 250-500cc range to be sold through their respective distribution network.

The 310cc motorcycle and its engine were developed jointly with the German automobile giant BMW on a common platform/architecture. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

Not revealing any numbers about the number of units made or shipped out for BMW President and CEO K.N. Radhakrishnan said it is up to the German auto major to talk about the numbers.

Speaking to a group of journalists who visited the company's Hosur plant on Tuesday, Radhakrishnan said TVS Motor is yet to decide on the distribution model-separate network or sold through existing dealership - for its own 310cc bike Akula that would be launched next fiscal. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

Radhakrishnan said the company has budgeted a capital expenditure of around Rs 350 crore next fiscal towards capacity expansion and other aspects.

"The investment will be funded out of internal accrual," he said.

According to him, the company has started rolling out BS-IV emission norms compliant vehicles. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

Ookla says Airtel speedtest based on Q3-Q4 data, Jio reacts-The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

21 March 2017

A day after Reliance Jio lodged a complaint with the advertising watchdog against broadband tester Ookla declaring Airtel as the "Fastest Mobile Network" in India, Ookla on Tuesday clarified that test was based on third and fourth quarter data of 2016.

On Monday, Reliance Jio had complained to the Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) against Ookla's testing. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

"Ookla named Airtel as the 'Fastest Mobile Network' in India based on data from Q3 and Q4 of 2016. When analysing markets, like India, we take many factors into consideration, including dual SIM devices, network technology, device types and more," said Jamie Steven, COO, Speedtest by Ookla, in a statement. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

"In addition to what the user sees on their mobile application as they take a test in real time, we apply a rigorous methodology while aggregating the data which uses a variety of internal data sources that control potential variability in the market," he said.

"We have taken dual SIM information into consideration and fully stand behind Airtel being named 'India's Fastest Mobile Network'," Steven said.

"Ookla has baldly stated that they stand by their results and has skirted the main issue. We will initiate actions as we deem fit at appropriate forums. The public should not be misled by these false claims based on the Ookla results," said Reliance Jio spokesperson on Tuesday.

"The claim of Airtel that it is India's fastest network is false, misleading and incorrect. The claim is being made by Airtel acting in a mala fide manner in collusion with Ookla LLC, who profess to be experts in the domain space of testing mobile internet speed," stated the letter sent by Reliance Jio to the ASCI, the advertising watchdog on Monday.

Meanwhile, Rajiv Mathrani, Chief Brand Officer, Bharti Airtel, said in a statement on Tuesday: "We are rather amused by the allegations being made against our campaign. We believe that this is a deliberate attempt to malign our brand and misguide customers through a campaign of misinformation, which is something we now come across on a regular basis, in particular, on social media platforms." The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

"The core issue is that the speedtest results are attributed to the primary SIM even though the SIM for which the data speedtest is conducted is the secondary SIM in the case of dual-SIM phones," said Jio spokesperson on Tuesday.

"In India, more than 90 per cent of 4G phones are dual-SIM. Therefore, there is no guarantee that the speed which is attributed to Airtel is of the Airtel data network. We are surprised that Ookla in its press release has not talked about this issue even though they had acknowledged the blunder to us earlier," the spokesperson stated.

Newcomer Reliance Jio, which has over 100 million subscribers, has also separately served a legal notice to Ookla for what it has termed as its "flawed" test.

Jio told ASCI that Ookla -- which had dubbed Airtel as "Officially The Fastest Network" -- does not have any accreditation from the Indian government.

"Without prejudice to the above, in any event, the way the award is being projected misleads the public into believing that Airtel has the fastest network today, that is when the advertisements are being aired/published," the letter said. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

STOCK INDEX FUTURES

Stock index futures fell yesterday as traders started to question the rate of progress of President Trump’s pro-growth strategies.
Mortgage applications in the week ended March 17 fell 2.7%, which compares to the 3.1% increase in the previous week.
The 9:00 central time February existing home sales report is expected to show a .4% increase to 5.55 million. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

Our computer models suggest the bull market for stock index futures will continue in spite of the current political uncertainties and higher interest rates from the Federal Reserve.
CURRENCY FUTURES
The U.S. dollar fell yesterday and is only a little higher today. The greenback appears to be underperforming, while other markets such as Treasuries and the Japanese yen, are being supported by the flight to quality influence.
Also, the U.S. dollar continues to be undermined by the statement from last week’s Federal Open Market Committee meeting, which indicated a measured pace of rate hikes rather than the aggressive schedule of increases that some analysts had predicted.
The U.S. dollar has lost its interest rate differential expectations advantage that propelled the greenback to 14 year highs last year. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

The euro currency is little better even though a report showed the euro zone current account surplus narrowed in January from the previous month.
The British pound made a four week high in the overnight trade. However, recent profit taking took the pound a little lower. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

Strength in the pound yesterday was linked to news that U.K. inflation exceeded estimates, rising above the Bank of England’s inflation target for the first time in over three years.
Financial futures markets are now predicting the Bank of England will increase its key lending rate by 25 basis points in August of 2018.
INTEREST RATE MARKET FUTURES
Futures advanced yesterday and today due to flight to quality buying, as traders began questioning the rate of progress of President Trump’s pro-growth strategies.
There are no Federal Reserve speakers today. However, Fed Chair Yellen will speak tomorrow, giving the opening keynote at the Federal Reserve System Community Development Research Conference in Washington.
The probability of a rate hike at the Fed’s May 3 policy meeting is 6%, which is unchanged from Monday and the probability of a rate increase at the June 14 meeting is 54%, which compares to 58% yesterday.
While flight to quality buying has recently, and likely only temporarily supported the thirty year Treasury bond futures, the dominant bearish influence will put pressure on futures in the longer term. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

21 March 2017

I had mentioned in Monday’s closing report that Nifty, Sensex were to move sideways. The major indices of the Indian stock markets were range-bound on Tuesday and ended flat over Monday’s close. The trends of the major indices in the course of Tuesday’s trading are given in the table below: The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

Major Indices (The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions)
Indian equity markets slipped for the second consecutive trade session on Tuesday as selling pressure was witnessed in healthcare, banking and automobile stocks. The key indices traded in the red during the mid-afternoon trade session as investors booked profits. By the end of the day’s trading, bulls returned and the major indices ended flat. A strong rupee and broadly positive global cues aided the key indices to pare some losses and close the day on a flat note. On the NSE, there were 498 advances, 960 declines and 56 unchanged. On the BSE, there were 1,088 advances, 1,694 declines and 192 unchanged.

IT (information technology), banking, pharma, auto, oil-gas and textile sector stocks traded with bearish sentiments due to profit booking at higher levels. Aviation, FMCG (fast moving consumer goods) and power sector stocks also traded on a lower note. However, cement sector stocks traded with firm sentiments due to buying support.

Titan Company Limited on Tuesday announced that it will integrate IBM Watson Customer Engagement solutions to serve as the backbone of its online platform, enabling the company to tailor online campaigns and increase its customer base. Titan aims to use IBM's platforms to drive visitors to its brand websites as well as footfall into its 1,500 retail stores and 10,000 multi-brand outlets located across India. Titan shares closed at Rs463.70, down 0.40% on the BSE.

State-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) on Tuesday launched a plan that will provide 2GB data per day for Rs339 per month. "To compete with Jio and other private players, we have introduced the cheapest plan with a rental value of Rs 339 per month. Under this plan, the consumer will get 2GB per day," said Sanjiv Tyagi, General Manager, BSNL. "In a month, the consumer will get 30 GB data and 25 minutes free call per day. After consumption of 25 minutes a levy of 25 paisa per minute will be imposed," he added. The plan will be effective from April 1, 2017. The closely related state-run Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited’s shares closed at Rs24.15, down 3.01% on the BSE. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Tuesday moved the Finance Bill, 2017, for consideration and passage in the Lok Sabha, saying that since it provides for electoral bonds, it required consideration as a Money Bill, which can only be debated in the Lower House. The passage of the Bill in Parliament would bring continued stability to the stock markets in India.

US stocks closed mixed after wavering between small gains and losses on Monday, as investors digested remarks from several US Federal Reserve officials. The Dow fell 0.04%, and the S&P 500 lost 0.20%, while the Nasdaq edged up 0.01%. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions

The US has told India that there is no significant change in its H1-B visa regime, Parliament was informed on Monday.  Commerce Minister Nirmala Sitharaman told the Lok Sabha during Question Hour that India is vigorously articulating its concerns on visa policy to the new American administration, which has assured there is no significant change in the H1-B visa regime.  The fear, at least for 2017, is not proved to be correct. They (US authorities) are saying their current priority is to deal with the illegal immigrants," Sitharaman said. This would quieten the fears of IT industry watchers in India. The S&P BSE Information Technology index closed at 10,475.39 up 0.33% on the BSE. The Total Investment & Insurance Solutions
